A Library Orientation Programme was successfully organized on 5th August, 2026 for the newly admitted students of B.Sc. Semester-I (Physics) at Gujarat Arts and Science College, Ahmedabad. The programme was conducted at the Veer Shahid Vinod Kinariwala Library with the objective of introducing students to the library’s resources, facilities, services, and digital platforms that will support their academic and research activities throughout their studies.
The orientation session was conducted by Dr. Sandip S. Patel, Librarian, who welcomed the students and explained the vital role of the college library in higher education. He emphasized the importance of developing effective information literacy skills and encouraged students to make optimum use of the library’s print and digital resources.
During the session, the following topics were covered in detail:
- Overview of the library and its various services available to students and faculty members.
- Introduction to the library collection, including textbooks, reference books, competitive examination books, journals, newspapers, magazines, dissertations, and other learning resources.
- Demonstration of the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for searching and locating books available in the library.
- Explanation of library membership, book borrowing procedures, circulation services, and library rules and regulations.
- Introduction to the library’s digital services and electronic resources available for academic learning and research.
- Detailed presentation on ONOS (One Nation One Subscription), explaining how students can access thousands of scholarly journals, e-books, and research databases through this Government of India initiative for higher education institutions.
- Awareness about the importance of ethical use of information resources and responsible library practices.
After the interactive orientation session, the students were taken on a guided tour of the library. They visited the circulation counter, reading hall, reference section, stack area, periodicals section, digital resource access facilities, and other important sections of the library. The tour helped students understand the organization of library collections and the procedures for accessing various services.
The programme concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which students enthusiastically clarified their queries regarding library membership, book borrowing, OPAC searching, and access to electronic resources. The orientation programme was highly informative and received an encouraging response from the students. It is expected that the programme will help the newly admitted Physics students effectively utilize the library’s resources and services for their academic excellence and lifelong learning.
